First Aid and CPR Re-Certification — Saskatoon

Who is eligible to renew

Re-certification is for people whose Canadian Red Cross first aid or CPR certificate is still within its validity period. The Red Cross sets the eligibility rules:

• Standard First Aid renewal: Available to anyone holding a current (unexpired) Canadian Red Cross or equivalent Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certificate.
• Emergency First Aid renewal: Available to anyone holding a current Emergency First Aid certificate.
• CPR Level A, C, or HCP renewal: Available to current certificate holders at the same or higher level.
• BLS renewal: Clinical employers in Saskatchewan typically require annual BLS renewal — we run dedicated BLS renewal sessions on a monthly cycle.

If your certificate has already expired, you'll need to retake the full course. The Red Cross does allow a small window of flexibility in some recently-lapsed cases — call us with your certificate's expiry date and we'll tell you straight up whether you still qualify for the renewal track.

What the recertification session involves

The renewal isn't a shortcut around the underlying competency standard. It's a condensed format that assumes you already hold the knowledge base and pushes you straight into the updated material and the skill check.

The session covers:

• Guideline updates — anything that's changed in CPR, AED operation, or first aid practice since your previous cohort. ILCOR releases a major consensus update on a five-year cycle; the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada incorporates those updates into Canadian Red Cross curriculum on roughly the same rhythm.
• Skill refresher — practising compressions, AED workflow, choking management, bleeding control, and patient assessment on manikins
• Scenario work — running through emergencies with classmates simulating patients, including handover to EMS
• Skill assessment — your instructor formally evaluates your performance on the core practical skills
• Knowledge check — the same written assessment standard you completed during your initial certification

If during the renewal it becomes clear that someone's skill set has decayed past the certification standard, we don't paper over it. Our instructors will give extra time and coaching where they can; in rare cases where the full course is genuinely needed, we'll have that conversation honestly. The certificate at the end means the same thing as a brand-new one — that's what gives it value.

When to schedule your renewal

Booking 60–90 days ahead of your expiry date is the practical sweet spot. Two reasons:

1. Renewal cohorts fill up, especially in spring and fall when workplace compliance deadlines tend to cluster (many Saskatchewan employers certified groups of staff at the same time and now those groups all expire together).
2. If your card has already expired by the day of class, you can't take the renewal — you have to take the full course at full cost. A few weeks of advance planning saves real money.

What to bring

• Your current Canadian Red Cross certificate or wallet card (digital or physical). Without it we can't verify eligibility for the renewal track.
• Comfortable clothing — you'll be working on the floor on manikins.
• Photo ID.

Workplace and group renewals

Saskatchewan employers who certified their team in a single cohort three years ago typically find the whole team coming due for renewal around the same time. That's actually convenient — a single onsite renewal session at your facility costs significantly less than sending everyone to public sessions individually, and saves the productivity loss of staff traveling.
